Wild Card Assignment

Just as our previous narrative, I was in charge of the storyboard for our film.  They always seem to take longer than originally anticipated, but I eventually got them done.  There wasn't much to go on, aside from a rough sketch of a begging middle and end.  Because of this it gave me a lot of room to incorporate my own ideas.  This included a rather interesting teardrop sequence that I cannot wait to see on the screen.  What did prove difficult was finding a time that we could all meet in Randal library.  In fact most of the ideas we discussed were over Facebook.  Being that I had to leave for Easter break, I was never able to partake in building a script, something that I regret.  After sending the script to my group, it was up to them to create the script on their own.  After looking over it I was quite impressed and it fir the storyboards in an appropriate manner.

My editing experience

As me, Alyson, Megan and Victoria, began our editing it didn’t feel like it was going to take that long.  I was wrong, due to setbacks, such as premier closing on its own and corrupting my second sound file, it wasn’t until 3 a.m. that night that we were able to pack up our bags and go home.  Ill be honest, I learned more about sound in this assignment than I ever thought I would learn in my four years at UNCW.  I really enjoyed the way our group chose to approach the theme.  “I need you to do this and we need you to do that”, the first time around we approached it from the angle of rebellion, and the second time around we gave the sound the perspective of an argument between a man and a wife.  The lighting proved very beautiful, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the final result

Sound Blog

I imagined that the sound recordings would be difficult, having to create sounds that were unique and different from one another, I imagined would be difficult.   But after the first five min of recording, I knew it would not be as difficult as I had previously imagined.  Bringing props such as pill bottles, boxes of tissues, or various objects that are capable of making sound helped a great deal.  What also helped out a great deal was the whisper booth, I had known idea it was as quite as it was in there.  As soon as Victoria and I got inside my ears began to ring from it being so quite.  This made the quality of the sound astounding, no disturbing hum in the background, nor a distant whisper interrupting the recording.  Editing the sound was also rather easy, all we had to do was copy, cut and paste our sound onto premiere, and presto, everything was done.

Editing

From the start I new editing was going to prove a difficult task.  Between the shotgun mike not working, the lawnmower in the background, and problematic lighting, it was clear to me that there was a lot to do.  To make matters worse I had very little experience with adobe premier, as did the rest of the group.  It was a slow start, but once we got the hang of syncing up the sound, and creating a likable continuity the editing became less and less of a challenge.  Though with more experience in adobe premiere I would have been able to create an overall better looking and sounding final product, the job I did with the experience I had proved very rewarding.  It was a piece that I a helped make, that I contributed to.  In many ways it re-inspired my goals in filmmaking.  Not only that, in the editing session I learned how to do things I was previously unaware of, such as sound editing and lighting.

Previsualization

Being in charge of the storyboards it was my job to turn what the director wanted into individual shots.  When it came to filming the footage the storyboards acted as our major guide.  Without them it would have been nearly impossible to shoot even the simplest of shots.  We have just started shooting and we have already gained back the time it took to draw each shot.  Something that I did not think would happen.  Being that the script gave room for imagination we took the opportunity to create a story about a man who isn’t aware of personal boundaries.  With the help of a grown guard and a pair of short shorts we were able to bring this character to life.  However without the use of pre-visualization we would not have been able to do this as early as we did.  Overall the use of pre-visualization helped to get our film started and keep it on the right track.

Master Shot

For our master shot assignment it fell upon me to be in charge of the sound, and as such I am expected to contribute my ideas regarding this area.  Along with being in charge of sound, I also took on the responsibility of creating the storyboards for the project.  Being this early into the preproduction stage any ideas regarding sound are subject to change.  However there are a few things that I need to take care of for the final presentation, one of them being the sound of a socket wrench cranking.  I also need to look into the sounds of footsteps and heavy breathing.  One can get a basic idea of how the sound will operate by looking at the storyboards.  The storyboards were much more time consuming than I had originally realized, and took carful planning to complete.  Despite this in the end they turned out great, with a clear understanding of how the narrative will flow.
